Charles II |
![]() Charles II lived in exile in France, and was invited back as king of England in the "Restoration" without any formal limit on his power to rule - with the big exception that he had to ask Parliament for money. He received a secret "pension" from French king Louis XIV. English people rightly suspected he wanted to return the country to Catholicism. He had no children, so the throne passed to his brother, James II. |
