Transmanche Heritage Project

Introduction

This project has been extended to enable its work to be substantially completed by the end of 2001. Its aim is to increase awareness of the common cultural heritage of the "Transmanche" region (Kent / Nord-Pas de Calais), and thus help develop tourism.

	UK coordinator: Invicta Media Productions Ltd of Dover
	French coordinator: CRDP (Centre Régional de Documentation Pédagogique) of Lille

Each coordinator is working with partners and supporters involved in heritage, culture and tourism including local authorities, regional organisations and transport companies.The project uses "state-of-the-art" multimedia to provide information about:

• · Kent in French for audiences in Nord-Pas de Calais; and
• · Nord-Pas de Calais in English for people in Kent.

The approach

• · target group tour organisers as well as independent travellers;
• · complement current tourist marketing and existing networks for cross-Channel distribution and publicity;
• · emphasise the visitors' perspective based on market research;
• · develop content about themes as well as specific locations.

Over the project period (now May 1998 - December 2001) the project will build up a coherent supportive network of information sources to help and encourage visitors to explore the region's cultural heritage.

Outcomes and timetable

• · establish two-language websites - as a major "flagship" for the Project", to provide back-up information, and links for contact by e-mail, etc. - the popular www.theotherside.co.uk about North France, has been up-and running since May 1999 and "De l'autre côté du détroit" about Kent, joined it in May 2000.
• · produce and distribute two videos for group tour organisers (one French, one English) - FREE on application to teachers and group organisers - release date t.b.c.;
• · produce and distribute one joint bilangual video about the history of coastal areas and Channel crossings - also FREE on application to teachers and group organisers - release date t.b.c.
• · produce joint two-language CD-ROMs about cultural heritage of the region - with tourist information about places to visit, and links to websites - release date t.b.c.
• · develop broadcast and press coverage to create a high profile to help raise public awareness - major campaign on release of videos and CD-ROM
