Charles I

Charles got into problems over Protestants thinking he favoured a return to Catholicism, and over his belief in his "divine right to rule". He lacked the powers and cash of the French monarchy, and mishandled the situation - which led to a Civil War. Charles lost, and was beheaded. His son fled to exile in France. When the Parliamentary leader, Cromwell died, Charles II eventually returned as king.
