The Pas de Calais is much more rural than the Nord

The old Artois domain is a large part of present-day Pas de Calais.

. The Counts of Flanders and Hainaut were also powerful in the region - England had captured Calais and Pointhieu (Abbeville) after victory at the Battle of Crécy (1346).
