What you'll find in a
hostel
France has two chains of youth hostels: FUAJ and LFAJ. Both
offer low-cost, basic but comfortable sleeping
accommodation, with washrooms, recreation rooms, etc
suitable for cyclists, walkers, hikers and anyone travelling
on a budget. You can buy breakfast and evening meals, or
cook your own.
They offer very good value for groups, and often have
good conference/ teaching rooms. Group organisers will get
good rates and every assistance for bookings outside the
peak holiday season. Hostels are also suitable for
independent travellers, and generally offer special
facilities for families.

How to book
ahead
For groups:
FUAJ offers a central reservation service for groups of more
than 10 people, e.g. a school party, a sports team or other
group, whatever your project is and whether you will be
travelling in France or abroad: seminar, travel, stay, tour
etc... have a look at their offers and leave it to their
Group Section to organize it. See their
contact details below.
For independent
travellers: to be sure to find a bed in French
hostels, it is advisable to book ahead - especially in the
peak holiday season. You can book at most French hostels by
fax - or in some cases by e-mail - up to 6 months in
advance.
Do you need to
be a member?
To stay in a Youth Hostel in France, you will need a
hostelling membership, which you can obtain from your
national Association (connect to the International Youth
Hostel web site to know its address -http://www.iyhf.org).
If you forget to purchase one before your arrival in
France, you will be able to get hold of a "Guest Card" at
the hostel. Once you have paid for a few nights at a higher
rate, you will be entitled to full membership and given
access to any Youth Hostel in the world.
