Where Henry V won on St.Crispin’s Day
Thanks perhaps to Shakespeare’s version of Henry V’s speech to rouse his tired and out-numbered troops on the eve of battle, the long-distant Battle of Agincourt is still remembered:

This day is called the feast of Crispian:

He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,

Will stand a tip-toe when this day is named,

And rouse him at the name of Crispian.

He that shall see this day, and live old age,

Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,

And say, "To-morrow is Saint Crispian."

Then will he strip his sleeve, and show his scars,

And say, "These wounds I had on Crispin's day."

Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,

But he'll remember, with advantages,

What fears he did that day...

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;

Or close the walt up with our English dead...

In peace, there's nothing so becomes a man,

As modest stillness, and humility:

But when the blast of war blows in our ears,

Then imitate the action of the tiger.

Life-size model of a knight on horseback in full armour. Find out how long it took to prepare for battle, and how the knight was helpless if he fell to the ground. The displays are set in a building designed like a typical medieval barn of the region.

At Azincourt you can tour the battlefield - k/a 'Agincourt' by the English - where in 1415 Henry V's English army massacred a French army 5 times as numerous. They hailed arrows from massed ranks of longbow archers on the French cavalry, who slithered around in the mud and rain, unable to escape because of their clumsy armour and the surrounding forests. The new Medieval History Centre in the village not only tells the story of the battle, but sets thewhole bloody conflict in context. It is a good starting point and preparation for walking round the battle site.
