Les Gayantines de Douai -local sweets

"Travellers, tourists! Don't leave Douai without a box of these exquisite sweets.. Gayantines - the speciality of Douai!"	Sweets for the local giants! A shop opposite the Town Hall and belfry makes and sells the oldest confectionary speciality of Douai - "Gayantines" named after the town giants, who are pictured on the souvenir packaging. the sweets themselves have a milk-caramel shell filled with a soft butter/caramel paste, in vanilla or chicory (coffee) flavour. They also make delicious chocolate from carefully selected cocoa beans roast and ground on the premises. Amongst their other specialities are "Les Boulets du Ch'ti" - a fine praline centre covered in chocolate, shaped like pieces of coal as a tribute to the old coal-mining tradition of the Douai area. There's not a lot of room in the shop, so it's not suitable for a large group - but they make very nice sweets and chocolate! They also do mail order.
