Apothecary's jar displayed in the elegant turn-of-the-century Leroux mansion	World's No.1 The family firm of Laroux based in Orchies is the world's number 1 chicory producer, and they have recently made a museum out of the owners' mansion - devoted to this plant [see chicory] and its many beneficial uses. Apothecaries You will see ceramic utensils used by monks and apothecaries to prepare their remedies, along with a unique collection of European pottery from the 16th to 19th centuries. Before instant coffee was invented, bottles of chicory essence were promoted as a cheaper and more convenient alternative. Some prefer its distinctive bitter taste. The museum displays a host of packaging, labels and marketing materials produced by several generations of chicory roasters in Orchies.
