Mills Museum
Villeneuve d'Ascq - near Lille

2 post mills
The museum's two post-mills

You are climbing a ladder to enter the body of a post-mill. The wooden structure dates from 1743. It towers above you, the sweeps creak as they turn slowly in the gentle breeze wafting across the Town Park... Inside is the only wind-powered linseed oil mill in the world that's still working. In the 19th century there were 200 of these oil mills around Lille - this is the sole survivor.

The other is a flour mill (1776) - both are powerful reminders of how Nord/Pas-de-Calais was an important and rich farming region before the Lille area became an industrial and mining conurbation as well.

At the Museum you can also see a water-powered tilt hammer, and various collections of mill

machinery from other wind- and water-mills in the region, millstones (one 6,000 years old), and a unique collection of 18th and 19th century wood-working tools.

Once you've visited the Mills Museum, you'll want to explore the other 40 or so wind- and water-mills the "A.R.A.M." organisation has restored in the region over the past 20 years.
