Surviving Fragments of a lost heritage In countless wars, invasions and civil upheavals over the centuries, most of the fine medieval buildings and works of art created in Nord Pas-de-Calais have been lost. A large proportion of religious art was destroyed in the turmoil of the French Revolution. However enough fragments and tantalising glimses in old documents remain to give us some insight in the rich flowering of gothic art in medieval Nord Pas-de-Calais.
