Market town in scenic valley
The Artois hills have some of the most productive grain farms in Europe, and St. Pol lies in the pretty valley of the River Turnoise. It's on the road from Arras into the Artois hills, at a strategic cross-roads in the middle of vast acres of fields. In medieval times it had one of the most important castles in northern France, but wartime has devastated historic remains - especially the fighting in 1940 and following the 1944 Normandy invasions of German-occupied France by the Allies.
