Maison du Sauvetage

Sea-angling off Gravelines

The Maison du Sauvetage is in Grand-Fort-Philippe, just to the east side of Gravelines. Its models and displays tells the story of sea rescues, and the dangers of deep sea cod-fishing expeditions to the stormy cold waters off Iceland.

Today's fishermen
Gravelines and Grand-Fort-Philippe are still lively ports with boats arriving and leaving each day for fishing in local waters.

Boat trips and angling trips
Boats leave from Gravelines and Dunkerque which will take you for a sea trip to see the ports and the coastline - or to have a go at fishing yourself.

"Le Christ Roi", a former shrimp-boat, and "Le Père Duval", a former trawler are amongst those that offer trips.

Curing the herring catches
You can visit several local herring-curing sheds on the coast at Grand-Fort-Philippe near Gravelines, where they preserve fish by traditional methods - salting, drying, smoking to make kippers, etc....
