Auberge de la Grenouillere, near Montreuil
Julian Lucas - your guide to eating and drinking on theotherside

The walls of the "froggery" restaurant are decorated with illustrations of Fontaine's fable of the frog who ate until he exploded, because wanted to be as big as an ox - painted in the 1930's by the English artist Frank Reynolds.

Michelin 1-star restaurant

The chef, Roland Gauthier, changes the menu monthly, and uses fresh local ingredients in his welcoming restaurant which is reknowned for its cooking. Pleasant to sit out in the coutyard in fine weather - we strolled by the river after our meal.

...Le Grenouille can be found in a lovely Auberge, a short distance from Montreuil sur Mer, in a tranquil setting by a river. The restaurant is everything one has come to expect from a Michelin starred restaurant. The service, atmosphere and food are of the highest quality. The setting is delightful, and the restaurant rooms are intimate, formal, but humorous with many references to the frog.

The set menus are good but if you wish to sample the specialite de maison, "frogs legs" you must go a la carte. This is when it can become expensive. The wine list is extensive, multicultural and includes some of the most sought after wines in France....but it isn't cheap. Expect to pay around E100 per head..
